Unofficial
seconders sought for Rex
Harvey IAAF panel bid
Rex
Harvey of Ohio is running for a seat on the IAAF Masters Committee. This important committee serves as liaison between IAAF and
WMA (World Masters Athletics). IAAF is a critical source of funds that
WMA allocates to its international track and field programs.
At the USATF National Convention in early December, Rex will be running against Charles DesJardins of Nevada. Charles, who has
held this position for the past eight years, is primarily connected
with the masters LDR program. Choosing Rex would provide stronger representation for track and field on the IAAF Committee.
USATF
Masters Committee Chairman George Mathews has officially
nominated Rex for this post.
For
those who are unfamiliar with Rex, here are a few notes on his background. Rex is a tireless contributor to masters track and field.
He helped salvage the disaster in Durban at the 1997 world masters
meet, and he's worked hard behind the scenes at many other WMA meets -- much
of the time putting his own athletic career on the back burner. He is
a
masters world record holder in the decathlon and a longtime WAVA and
WMA official. He currently holds the position of WMA Vice President
Stadia and will oversee all technical aspects of the 2003 WMA World
Championships in Puerto Rico.
Rex is an athlete-oriented person and has always been open about his
ideas and plans.
The
Chairman of the IAAF Masters Committee is Cesar Moreno Bravo of
Mexico, a man with whom Rex has maintained a long and positive working
relationship. Thus, Rex would serve as an effective advocate for
Masters Track & Field and LDR on the IAAF Committee.
In short, Rex is both qualified and deserving of this position. He could use our support. His nomination has been officially seconded,
but additional seconds will help demonstrate the respect and goodwill that
Rex has developed within the masters community. Many of you will not
be in Kansas City to vote, so please take this opportunity to show your
support.
